Our history
The Prehistory (1918-1971)
Sylvatica was founded in 1939 as the Wageningen Student Forestry Association (WSBV), although the first Forestry courses were already given in 1918. Both the forestry courses and the association were based in villa Hinkeloord. In 1943 the first committee was founded; the Wandelende Tak, which still exists today! The first Statutes date back to 1955.
The Middle Ages (1971-1990)
Since 1972, the Hinkelnymf has been the magazine for the association and since May 1974, the association has been registered at the Chamber of Commerce (KvK). The International Forestry Student Organisation Wageningen (IFSOW), part of the International Forestry Student Association (IFSA), was also founded in this period in the year 1990.
The Modern Age (1990-Present)
At the beginning of the 21st century the association went through drastic changes. Sylvatica, which means "from the woods", was added to the name WSBV in 2001. The meaning of WSBV had also been broadened from just Forestry to Forest and Nature Conservation. Additionally, the following year the previously independent Hinkelnymf and IFSOW were included in WSBV Sylvatica.
WSBV Sylvatica also left their famous villa in which they were grounded together with the faculty. After having been homeless for a while, the assocation finally found a new place in Dreijenborch. After a few years at the new location, it was time to migrate again. This time to our current home together with the other study assocations: Forum. In 2015 we celebrated the big milestone of our 75th anniversary. To honour this we planted a European White Elm (Ulmis laevis) on campus. This 'Lustrumtree' can be found by the bench in between Orion and Forum. Most recently, in 2022, Fulica atra was founded; the association's first fratority.
